In 1998, Kornegay played professional basketball in Australia for the Brisbane Bullets of the NBL. After his stint down under, Kornegay moved to Spain, and played for a number of teams in that country before eventually hanging on with the Spanish team Unicaja Malaga of the Euroleague.

He patrolled the pivot there from 2001 to 2004, and even represented Spain in their 3rd-place run through the 2001 European Basketball Championship in Turkey. In 2005, Kornegay returned to Turkey to play for Besiktas ColaTurka of the Turkish Basketball League . After his stint in Turkey, Kornegay moved back to Spain to play for Etosa Alicante. He coaches annually at his old college, Villanova, for summer basketball camp. The team he coached at camp won the high school championship in 2012.

After graduation, Kornegay was selected by the Yakima Sun Kings in the 3rd round with the 28th overall pick of the 1997 CBA draft. A great feature that both of these homes already had was an ideal transition entry space. Having a secondary entry is essential in reducing trauma for the child and the current residents of the home. Children are brought directly to a Homes for Hope house where they are welcomed by foster parents and undergo an intake process designed to identify how to best meet the child’s needs and help the child feel safe. In these times of uncertainty, it is important to Adams County to have a safe place for each child to go. Your generous support will help us provide services such as therapy for trauma survivors, prevention efforts for at-risk children, and community outreach and education. Homes for Hope allows us to keep the children in the county, in their school, and in their community.

Adams County, Adams County Foundation, and Nightlight has partnered for this program. Two single-family houses have been completely renovated and are ready for families to move into. This is connected to children being removed from schools where mandated reporters can check in on the safety and stability of children in their classrooms. We are anticipating a large increase in calls for emergency placements as children begin to return to childcare in the summer and well into the fall when schools begin to open.

Counties Matter in Human Services There are over 257,000 county human services employees across the country delivering vital services to our nation’s most vulnerable populations. Adams County is working to expand services so the homes can be licensed at a therapeutic level of care to provide more wraparound services for families. “It was really a process of ‘how do we make it easier on the child, less traumatic, and also ease the burden on our staff? ’ by opening a program that notoriously has been done by faith-based groups or nonprofits and not by counties themselves,” Tedesco said. The program launched in 2019 when the county repurposed two county-owned houses acquired during an open space purchase, Tedesco said.

Under Colorado law, foster families can’t simply rely on income from providing foster care. That means host families must typically have someone who works outside the home or has some other form of income, he said. So instead, the 34-year-old decided to stay with her parents to save money. But with home prices skyrocketing in Dallas, she thought she’d never be able to buy her own home. After years of increasing home prices and now higher interest rates and inflation, it was clear that homeownership was a challenge for many of the group’s staff. He hoped a program to help put homeownership in reach would make more employees want to stay and encourage new ones to join the organization. Families partner with us and contribute a minimum of 300 hours of sweat equity, hours of Home Owner Readiness classes and pay a minimal down payment on their mortgage. Counselors break down her finances to help her see what she can afford and how she can save. They explain down payments, closing costs, mortgage insurance, what to look for in a home inspection, and other costs and complexities of home buying and ownership. Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio works with low-income families who would not otherwise be able to afford a home. We partner with hardworking families in need and help them build affordable homes for themselves and their families at no interest and no profit.

Cross Timber Homes is a 2-year-old offshoot of Habitat for Humanity of San Antonio, which funded startup costs for the nonprofit in 2017 along with the community development nonprofit LISC and the City of San Antonio. Cross Timber also shares warehouse space with Habitat, which helps with managing the fluctuating cost of construction materials. Crawford says that while employee turnover has not been unusually high, hiring new employees has been a challenge given very low unemployment rates.
